More than 30 000 new seeds arrive at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault
In June 1st, 2021, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault received its highest number of seed deposits since February 2020 – since the worldwide response to Covid 19 made international transfers more difficult.
Seeds from Strawberries Deposited at the First Seed Vault Opening of 2021
FAO’s International Year of Fruits and Vegetables is being recognized all around the globe—including at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. At the first Seed Vault opening for the year, seeds from watermelon, strawberry and pumpkin were deposited. The February deposit also included seeds from several other species from genebanks in Africa, Europe and South Asia.
Long travelled seeds in place in the Seed Vault
The second regular Seed Vault opening this year was accomplished during the first week of June. Two gene banks deposited seeds at this occasion; the US based Seed Savers Exchange and the Margot Forde Germplasm Centre in New Zealand. In addition the last portion of orchid seeds from the Myanmar Orchid project were placed in the Seed Vault.
Vegetable seeds from UK deposited
Next week the first seeds from the UK Vegetable Genebank at the University of Warwick will be deposited in Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It is the second gene bank in the United Kingdom to secure seeds in the Seed Vault.
Threatened Myanmar orchids conserved in the Seed Vault
The first deposit of 230 orchid seed samples took place in February 2017. A second batch consisting of seeds from 225 more species are underway and will be brought into the Vault in August. ICARDA seeds safe back in Lebanon and Morocco
Due to the conflict in Syria, ICARDA in 2015 became the first gene bank to withdraw seeds from their deposit in Svalbard Global Seed Vault. The second portion comprising 54354 seed samples in 161 boxes to be multiplied at ICARDA units in Terbol, Lebanon and Rabat, Morocco arrived safely now in October.

Withdrawal of ICARDA Aleppo seeds accomplished
By mid-August, the third and last part of the seeds deposited by the ICARDA gene bank in Aleppo, Syria were taken out of the Seed Vault and sent back to ICARDA units in Morocco and Lebanon. The total deposit from Aleppo during the years 2008 – 2014 constituted 116,484 seed samples and all these are now safely returned.
